Vietnam Introduces Low-Emission Rice Standards Boosting Sustainable Production

Vietnam has officially launched its first Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) process for rice cultivation, marking a milestone in the country’s efforts toward sustainable, low-emission rice production. The announcement, made during a recent conference in Can Tho City, underscores the government’s commitment to modernizing the rice sector while meeting international sustainability standards.

The MRV initiative is part of the broader project titled: “Sustainable Development of One Million Hectares of High-Quality, Low-Emission Specialized Rice Linked to Green Growth in the Mekong Delta by 2030.” It is designed to provide integrated guidance for rice cultivation, from seed selection and land preparation to fertilization, pest control, water management, harvesting, and storage.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, the MRV process enables accurate measurement, reporting, and verification of greenhouse gas reductions, laying the groundwork for certification and carbon credit verification in agriculture. It represents the first standardized, field-tested MRV mechanism for the Vietnamese rice sector.

Deputy Minister Tran Thanh Nam emphasized that the development of MRV was collaborative, involving research institutes, universities, international experts, and local authorities to ensure that the process is both technically sound and practically implementable. This positions Vietnam’s rice industry as globally competitive, particularly for premium, traceable, and sustainable rice exports.

The MRV process, alongside the high-quality, low-emission rice production procedures, offers multiple benefits for farmers, businesses, and international buyers:

  • Reduced emissions and production costs
  • Improved grain quality and yield
  • Enhanced transparency and traceability
  • Alignment with global sustainability standards

Implementation will start with the 2025-2026 winter-spring crop, followed by full regional expansion in 2027, enabling Mekong Delta provinces to integrate MRV into existing projects, plantation codes, traceability systems, and sustainability certifications.

For international buyers and B2B partners, the MRV process signals that Vietnamese rice is adopting green, smart, and circular practices, strengthening its position in premium and environmentally conscious markets. Exporters can now highlight low-emission credentials and traceability when supplying to high-demand regions such as the EU, USA, and UAE.

Vietnam’s MRV adoption is a critical step in transforming the rice sector, enhancing both domestic sustainability and global competitiveness. As the world increasingly prioritizes eco-friendly agricultural products, Vietnam is poised to offer high-quality, low-emission rice that meets international standards, benefiting farmers, distributors, and end consumers alike.
