From Importer to Top 3 Exporter Worldwide – Cam Rice

Eighty years ago, Vietnam was marked by one of its darkest chapters – the famine of 1945 that took more than 2 million lives. At that time, the nation even relied on rice imports to survive. Yet from those hardships came resilience and transformation. The turning point arrived in 1988 with Resolution 10, granting farmers autonomy and long-term land rights. Just a year later, Vietnam exported its very first 1.4 million tonnes of rice – a milestone that opened the door to global markets.

By 2024, Vietnam had exported nearly 9 million tonnes of rice, earning around USD 5.7 billion and firmly placing itself among the world’s Top 3 exporters. Export prices surpassed USD 600/tonne, the highest in years. This achievement not only secures domestic food supply but also underscores Vietnam’s critical role in global agriculture. The Mekong Delta now stands as a hub of innovation, cultivating climate-smart, high-yield varieties resistant to salinity and pests. Projects such as the “One Million Hectares of High-Quality, Low-Emission Rice” are reshaping the sector for sustainability and green growth.
