New Prospects for Low-Emission Rice and Vietnam’s Green Export Advantage
New Prospects for Low-Emission Rice and Vietnam’s Green Export Advantage
After more than two years of implementation, Vietnam’s project to develop one million hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice linked with green growth in the Mekong Delta is beginning to show tangible results. Improvements in policy frameworks, combined with practical field-level changes, are creating a solid foundation for the greening of the rice sector.
Advanced cultivation techniques have gradually been transferred to farmers, while enterprises have focused on standardising raw material areas. This coordinated approach is helping bridge the gap between sustainable production and market-ready supply chains, a critical factor for long-term export competitiveness.
Clear Economic Gains for Farmers
During the 2025 summer–autumn crop, 11 low-emission rice models were implemented across more than 543 hectares with the participation of 355 households. Compared with conventional cultivation areas, production costs were reduced by up to 4.9 million VND per hectare, while profits increased by as much as 15.8 million VND per hectare.
At the cooperative level, results have been particularly encouraging. In Can Tho City, rice grown under the low-emission model achieved higher yields, reduced seed usage, lower fertiliser and pesticide inputs, and fewer irrigation cycles. These changes not only improved profitability but also motivated farmers to expand cultivation areas in subsequent seasons.
Technology and Standards Driving Sustainability
A defining feature of the project is the integration of technology and standardised assessment tools. The recently introduced ViRiCert compliance assessment system allows farmers to evaluate their cultivation practices against ten sustainability criteria using only a smartphone and internet access.
Water management through alternate wetting and drying, along with the non-burning of straw, has emerged as a decisive factor in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. By making compliance measurable and transparent, the system helps farmers and cooperatives confidently demonstrate the green value of their rice to the market.
Stronger Advantages in Export Markets
As global rice trade increasingly prioritises sustainability and carbon footprint transparency, low-emission rice is gaining a clear advantage in premium export markets. Enterprises that can establish compliant raw material zones and verify emission reductions are better positioned to negotiate higher prices and long-term contracts.
Recent exports of low-emission rice to markets such as Japan and Australia highlight growing international demand. Beyond price premiums, low-emission rice offers a two-tier benefit: strengthening brand positioning in the high-quality segment while laying the groundwork for future participation in carbon credit mechanisms.
