Adding Value to Vietnam’s Rice Industry | Quality & Premium Positioning – Cam Rice

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has just approved a project to restructure Vietnam's rice industry until 2025 and 2030.
Accordingly, will continue to restructure the rice industry in the direction of improving efficiency and sustainable development with the following objectives: To fully meet domestic consumption demand, as the core for ensuring national food security. family; improve quality, nutritional value, ensure food hygiene and safety; forming and improving the efficiency of the rice value chain; climate change adaptation and mitigation; efficient use of natural resources and protection of the ecological environment; improve farmers' income and benefit consumers; export high quality and high value rice.
The target by 2025 is to keep the rice acreage at 3.6 to 3.7 million hectares, with rice production reaching between 40 and 41 million tons / year. In terms of rice export, the target by 2025 is 5 million tons, in which, fragrant rice, specialty rice and japonica make 40%, sticky rice 20%, high quality white rice 20%, medium and low grade rice 15 % and products processed from rice is 5%; percentage of branded rice is more than 20%. By 2030, the rice export target will reach 4 million tons, of which aromatic rice, specialty rice and japonica make 45%, sticky rice 20%, high quality white rice 15%, medium and low grade rice 10%, products processed from rice 10%; percentage of branded rice is more than 40%.
It can be seen that the remarkable point of the project is that the rice export volume has decreased gradually in each period, but the criteria for specialty rice, high quality rice, processed products from rice, and rate of commercial rice. Significantly increased year by year. This clearly shows the direction of the rice industry in the coming time to reduce the area and output for export to focus on improving rice quality and selling price. This is the right target and suitable for the current situation of rice production and export, especially in the context that Vietnam has signed many free trade agreements (FTAs) with international partners such as the Agreement on Free Trade. by Vietnam - EU (EVFTA); Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP); Free Trade Agreement between Vietnam and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (UKVFTA). At that time, in order to make the best use of the advantages of FTAs, it is required that the rice industry has to constantly improve product quality to meet increasingly strict requirements of importing countries.
Rice is a strategic commodity of our country, not only contributing to the economic development but also playing an important role in ensuring national food security. Therefore, promoting the restructuring of this industry is essential to better promote the achieved achievements, while at the same time arousing unexplored potentials.
To accomplish that, the solution in the coming time is to develop concentrated rice production areas according to the identified varieties, with the association of production, consumption and export; strictly control the production process, in which absolutely comply with the maximum limit of pesticide residue, traceability; apply post-harvest, preservation and processing technologies to reduce losses, ensure rice products of uniform quality, and fully satisfy food hygiene and safety regulations.
