West African countries will increase rice imports in the crop year 2020/2021

 
It is estimated that rice imports will increase by 20% in Guinea, by 16.6% in Mali, by 13.6% in Senegal, and by 3.5% in Burkina Faso.
Vietnam Trade Office in Algeria (Ministry of Industry and Trade) stated that increasing rice area and production in four countries including Burkina Faso, Mali, Guinea and Senegal in the 2020/2021 crop will not reduce these West African countries. rice exports due to high population growth and very competitive international prices.
According to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), rice acreage and production will increase by 2.6% and 3.3% respectively in the aforementioned countries in the 2020/2021 crop, equivalent to 2.3 million hectares and 4 , 9 million tons of paddy.
 
However, rice imports will also increase by nearly 13% to reach 2.8 million tons. In the crop year 2019/2020, rice imports of these 4 countries only reached 2.5 million tons, down 5.7% due to the increase in international rice prices due to the COVID-19 pandemic and blockade issues in European rice exporting countries. The US Department of Agriculture estimates that by 2020/2021, rice imports will increase 20% in Guinea to 600,000 tons, up 16.6% in Mali, equivalent to 350,000 tons, up 13.6% in Senegal, about 1.25 million tons and up 3.5% in Burkina Faso, equivalent to 600,000 tons.
 
Guinea and Mali have better rice self-sufficiency than the other two countries, meeting 80% and 87% of the demand in the 2019/20 crop, respectively. For Burkina Faso and Senegal, the rates are 44% and 30% respectively.
 
Data of the Ministry of Industry and Trade said that in 2019, Vietnam's rice export turnover to Senegal reached 32 million USD, to Guinea 751,818 USD and to Mali was 131,058 USD.
